Although high coffee consumption is associated with health benefits, some studies have linked coffee intake to detrimental effects on serum lipids. Elevated rates of coffee consumption have been reported in psychiatric patients, many of whom take antipsychotic medications that can worsen metabolic parameters. To study whether plasma methylxanthine levels (derived primarily from coffee, tea, energy drinks, other soft drinks, and chocolate) affect plasma lipid levels and body-mass index (BMI), Swiss investigators analyzed data on 630 psychiatric patients taking metabolically sensitive medications (psychosis diagnoses, 49%; quetiapine, 29%; smokers, 50%).
