Neurofilament light (NFL) protein in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) is a marker for axonal damage. In this case-control, single-center study, researchers examined whether NFL levels in the CSF are associated with neurodegeneration and disease progression.
The 913 participants included 75 healthy control patients. Diagnoses in the neurodegenerative group included mild cognitive impairment (MCI), Alzheimer disease (AD), amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), frontotemporal dementia (FTD), and parkinsonian syndromes such as Parkinson disease (PD), dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB), corticobasal syndrome (CBS), and progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP).
