Adherence to preexposure HIV prophylaxis (PrEP) significantly decreases the risk for new HIV infection among men who have sex with men (MSM). In many regions, rates of numerous sexually transmitted illnesses (STIs) have increased among MSM on PrEP, as concern about HIV risk has decreased. Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is most easily acquired through blood exposures such as sharing unclean needles among intravenous drug users. The risk for HIV infection from unsafe sex behaviors has been less well elucidated.
