Relatively little attention has been paid to the role of the father in adolescent sexual and reproductive health, despite the natural opportunity for a trusted family member to provide guidance. Researchers conducted individual semistructured interviews with 25 heterosexual boys ages 15 to 19 years (72% Latino, 28% African-American) and their fathers about father-son communication regarding condom use. Topics included communication strategies fathers could use, knowledge about condoms, and discussion of correct and consistent use.
Three principle themes were identified:
Fathers and sons felt that communication about condom use is “feasible and acceptable,” but barriers are common.
Style and frequency of communication can overcome barriers.
