A national survey of adolescents showed a striking increase in the prevalence of nicotine vaping from 2017 to 2018.
To assess use of nicotine products and vaping among adolescents from 2017 to 2018, researchers analyzed data from Monitoring the Future, a survey administered annually to a national sample of eighth-, tenth-, and twelfth-graders.
From 2017 to 2018, the prevalence of nicotine vaping increased among all grades; among twelfth-graders, there was a 10% absolute increase (from 11% to 21%). Prevalence of vaping increased among those who reported vaping nicotine, “just flavoring,” or both. Any use of nicotine increased significantly, and nicotine vaping accounted for all of this increase. The authors estimate that approximately 1.3 million additional teens vaped in 2018 versus 2017.
