For over 20 years, the standard instrument for endoscopic ultrasound (EUS)–guided tissue sampling of solid and cystic lesions has been the curved linear-array (CLA) echoendoscope, which features an oblique endoscopic view and a perpendicular ultrasound orientation. A forward-viewing linear (FVL) echoendoscope (which features both forward endoscopic and ultrasonographic views) was recently introduced as an alternative to the CLA device but has not achieved widespread adoption.
