Typically, patients presenting with autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) are initially treated with predniso(lo)ne (PRED) to rapidly induce remission. However, it is unclear whether high-dose PRED is more effective. Depending on which guidelines are used, the dose can range from 30 to 60 mg daily.
To determine the efficacy of different doses of PRED, this multicenter European retrospective study collected data on 451 patients with AIH enrolled between 1978 and 2017 at nine centers across five European countries. Patients were categorized as having received either low-dose PRED (<0.5 mg/kg/day; n=170) or high-dose PRED (≥0.5 mg/kg/day; n=281) at initiation of treatment. The primary outcome was normalization of liver enzymes at 6 months.
