Neonatal group B streptococcal disease (GBS) is a major cause of infant morbidity and mortality. The implementation of prenatal screening and prophylaxis for GBS colonization has dramatically reduced the incidence of early-onset disease (EOD), which occurs during the first week of life. However, this prevention strategy has not reduced the incidence of late-onset disease (LOD).
To better define the epidemiology of EOD and LOD, investigators have analyzed 9 years of data (2006–2015) from the multistate Active Bacterial Core surveillance program, which captures approximately 10% of U.S. born infants and in 2015 included 439,000 live births. Key findings included the following:
1277 cases of EOD and 1387 cases of LOD were identified.
