The literature is scarce regarding risk factors associated with autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) flares in pregnant patients, the course of AIH in pregnancy-related flares, and associated outcomes during the postpartum period.
To address these issues, investigators in Spain conducted a multicenter, retrospective, cohort study of 36 patients with a diagnosis of AIH and at least one pregnancy with subsequent follow-up during the postpartum period. An AIH flare was defined as elevation of liver enzymes requiring a change in immunosuppression therapy.
Results were as follows:
Among 46 pregnancies, 10 (22%) included an AIH flare a median of 2.6 months after delivery.
All flares were asymptomatic, and none required hospitalization.
