The original article on which this summary is based has been retracted after irregularities in the data analysis were identified. Based on outside comments, the authors retracted and resubmitted their data for failing to account for immortal time bias. The corrected analysis shows antibiotics on day 1 were associated with a marginally longer (but not clinically meaningful) length of hospital stay and higher cost of hospitalization, but lower risk for treatment failure in antibiotic-treated patients (7.1% vs 8.2%). After reanalysis of the data, the article has been republished (JAMA Intern Med 2021 Jan 19; [e-pub]).
