As many as 90% of patients use their inhalers incorrectly; incorrect technique is especially problematic in young children and elders. In a meta-analysis of eight studies, researchers examined whether inhaler education can improve asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) outcomes in older patients.
Types of educational interventions varied among studies. Researchers found improvement in patients' inhaler techniques when they received education, and 30% fewer exacerbations occurred among patients who underwent inhaler education programs led by pharmacists, nurses, or physicians compared with patients who received usual care. Some studies suggested that education with a placebo device was the most effective intervention.
