The HEART (History, Electrocardiogram, Age, Risk Factors, Troponin) score is highly sensitive for adverse cardiac events in emergency department (ED) patients being evaluated for possible coronary syndrome (Acad Emerg Med 2019 Feb; 26:140). However, its impact on hospitalization and resource utilization remains undefined. Investigators studied ED patients who were evaluated for chest pain at six centers in Sweden before and after the implementation of a new protocol suggesting ED discharge for patients with HEART score <4 and no elevation of high-sensitivity troponin at 0 and 1 hours. The primary outcome was admission rate, and patients were followed for 30 days.
