Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a class IIa indication for surgery in patients with severe degenerative mitral regurgitation (DMR). To learn about mortality in these patients, researchers identified 2425 patients in an international, severe DMR registry, classified them based on their cardiac rhythm at diagnosis, and followed them for a median of 9 years.
Patients with paroxysmal AF (13%) or persistent AF (19%) were older and more likely to be symptomatic than patients in sinus rhythm. Overall, 1889 patients (78%) eventually underwent surgery, 1463 (60%) within 6 months of diagnosis.
