Persistence of severe thrombocytopenia for more than a year — despite treatment with corticosteroids, rituximab, thrombopoietin mimetics, or splenectomy — is challenging for patients and physicians.
To evaluate the safety and efficacy of fostamatinib, an inhibitor of macrophage function newly approved for the treatment of chronic immune thrombocytopenia (ITP), investigators conducted two identical industry-sponsored, multicenter, randomized, controlled phase III trials (FIT1 and FIT2) involving a total of 150 patients who had inadequate response to at least one prior ITP therapy.
