Despite the substantial attention paid to statin adherence, few studies have examined how nonadherence affects mortality in patients with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD). To do so, these investigators made use of a database from the Veterans Affairs Health System, focusing on 347,104 adults with documented ASCVD and receiving stable statin prescriptions.
Statin adherence was assessed with the medication possession ratio, which is determined by dividing the number of days of outpatient statin dispensed during a 12-month period by the number of days the patient was alive and not hospitalized during that period.
