After complete resection of a locally advanced biliary cancer, standard adjuvant therapy with 6 months of capecitabine has been shown to improve progression-free and overall survival (J Clin Oncol 2018; 35:4006). In metastatic disease, gemcitabine plus cisplatin is standard chemotherapy, but whether this combination is useful as a postsurgical adjunct is unclear.
To address this issue, investigators conducted an open-label, multicenter, randomized, phase III trial of observation versus 6 months of adjuvant gemcitabine plus oxaliplatin in 196 patients after resection of biliary cancer.
