Researchers have explored mesenchymal precursor cells (MPCs) for promoting cardiac regeneration in individuals with failing ventricles, including those with advanced heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) requiring a left ventricular assist device (LVAD). A preliminary trial conducted in the NIH-sponsored Cardiothoracic Surgical Trials Network suggested that MPC therapy facilitated weaning from LVADs, at least temporarily. In this phase 2 trial (NCT02362646), the researchers enrolled 159 individuals with advanced HFrEF and scheduled for LVAD implantation (mean age, 56; 11% women; median LVEF, 15%; New York Heart Association class IV symptoms, 73%).
