Patients with severe, symptomatic intracranial atherosclerotic lesions have an elevated stroke risk. A previous randomized trial (SAMMPRIS) comparing best medical therapy (BMT) alone with BMT plus intracranial stenting was halted early due to a high (14.7%) 30-day complication rate in the stenting group. As a result, current guidelines recommend aggressive medical therapy for these patients.
These authors conducted an FDA-mandated, manufacturer sponsored single-arm registry study at 24 sites to assess the complication rate with the Wingspan stent system in patients with at least two previous strokes and 70% to 99% stenosis of a major intracranial vessel.
