Current guidelines recommend resection of hepatic adenoma (HA) >5 cm that does not regress over time in order to reduce risk for hemorrhage and malignant transformation. However, the rate of HA regression varies and can take longer than 12 months, so in clinical practice it is unclear how long to wait before resection.
Researchers in the Netherlands developed a clinically relevant prediction model to estimate the probability of regression of large HA (>5 cm) to <5 cm at 1 and 2 years after diagnosis. They retrospectively examined data from 180 women with large HA that still exceeded 5 cm at first follow-up imaging. Demographics, HA diameter, body-mass index, and HA subtype were used in modeling.
