Earlier screening is recommended for individuals with a family history of colorectal cancer or advanced adenomas. However, the appropriate management of individuals with a family history of nonadvanced adenomas is unclear, due to sparse literature and inconsistent guidelines.
In a prospective study, investigators in Hong Kong examined whether nonadvanced adenoma confers an elevated risk for neoplasia in first-degree relatives (FDRs). They identified 414 patients with nonadvanced adenoma and 414 patients with normal colonoscopies and invited one FDR per patient to undergo colonoscopy.
