Public health surveillance for histoplasmosis is limited. Currently, fewer than 1000 cases are reported each year, but the burden of disease is likely far higher. To better understand the presentation, diagnosis, and treatment of histoplasmosis, researchers at the Mycotic Diseases Branch of the Centers for Disease Control reviewed information from deidentified individual-level insurance claims in the U.S. Cases of histoplasmosis from 2012 through 2014 were identified using ICD-9-CM codes.
The review identified 1935 patients with a recent diagnosis of histoplasmosis. As expected, 79% of cases were reported from the central portion of the U.S.; 44.2% were from the northeast part of this region. The most common symptoms were shortness of breath…
