Dengue is the most common vector-borne infection globally causing an estimated 400 million infections and about 20,000 deaths annually. Development of a vaccine has been challenging because of wide circulation of four antigenically distinct dengue virus serotypes: dengue 1, 2, 3, and 4. Infection with one serotype typically protects against that serotype for life but predisposes to severe and potentially life-threatening infection upon subsequent infection with a different dengue serotype.
Vaccine composition: Dengvaxia contains live chimeric yellow fever dengue (CYD) virus serotypes 1, 2, 3, and 4 (4.5–6.0 log10 cell culture infectious dose 50%, each).
