Patients with Early MI Need Screening for Familial Hypercholesterolemia

Almost 10% of patients aged ≤50 with type 1 MIs had FH in a disease registry, but few achieved target LDL levels 1 year later.

Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) remains widely underrecognized and undertreated. To learn more about prevalence, treatment patterns, and clinical outcomes, investigators in an industry-supported study used the YOUNG-MI registry of patients aged ≤50 with myocardial infarctions (MIs) and identified 1996 adults (median age, 45; 19% women) who experienced a type 1 MI from 2000 to 2016.

In this cohort, 9% met Dutch Lipid Clinic Network criteria for probable or definite FH, 43% of whom were not on a statin pre-MI. At hospital discharge, FH patients were more likely to be prescribed a high-intensity statin than those without FH (63% vs. 48%). Few nonstatin therapies were prescribed.
