Carbapenem-resistant organisms including Pseudomonas aeruginosa (CRPA), Acinetobacter spp., and Enterobacteriaceae are an emerging cause of infections that are difficult to treat and can spread within healthcare facilities. These organisms have been relatively rare in the U.S., but from September 18 to November 19, 2018, the CDC received 31 reports of Verona integron-encoded metallo-ß-lactamase–producing carbapenem-resistant P. aeruginosa (VIM-CRPA) through the Antibiotic Resistance Laboratory Network. Six of these reports involved U.S. patients who had recently undergone invasive medical procedures in Mexico.
