Guideline: HIV Screening and Preexposure Prophylaxis

Updated guidelines on HIV screening and new recommendations for PrEP in persons at risk provide additional support for HIV elimination goals.

Background and Objective

Since 2013, when the USPSTF issued recommendations for HIV screening, advances have included approval of preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and confirmation of decreased HIV sexual transmission with antiretroviral therapy (ART) use. These recommendations reaffirm the prior ones for HIV screening and describe appropriate prescribing of PrEP.

Key Points

The USPSTF gives an A grade recommendation for HIV screening in adolescents and adults aged 15 to 65 years and in all pregnant women.
Adolescents <15 and adults >65 years old who are at high risk for HIV infection should also be screened.
