Alcohol consumption accounts for 5% to 11% of breast cancer cases in a dose-dependent fashion. To assess general knowledge about alcohol as a risk factor for breast cancer, investigators in the U.K. conducted surveys and focus groups among patients and staff at National Health Service mammogram facilities and clinics for women with breast concerns. In all, 88% of mammogram patients and 71% of clinic patients agreed to participate.
About two thirds of participants reported consuming alcoholic beverages. Alcohol was recognized as a breast cancer risk factor by 19.5% and 48.5% of patients and staff, respectively.
