New Maps of Malaria Show both Progress and Remaining Challenges

Global maps displaying the burden from falciparum and vivax malaria by geographic location since 2000 show that incidence and mortality are decreasing but progress is uneven.

To provide updated information on malaria incidence, prevalence, and mortality, investigators created updated global maps for falciparum malaria and the first high-resolution global maps for vivax malaria. They used multiple data inputs, drawing from the geostatistical methods established by the Malaria Atlas Project and the Global Burden of Disease study. They modeled results using a cartographic method for countries in sub-Saharan Africa and a surveillance-based method primarily outside of Africa. The models produce mortality estimates at a 5 × 5 km pixel scale.
