To provide updated information on malaria incidence, prevalence, and mortality, investigators created updated global maps for falciparum malaria and the first high-resolution global maps for vivax malaria. They used multiple data inputs, drawing from the geostatistical methods established by the Malaria Atlas Project and the Global Burden of Disease study. They modeled results using a cartographic method for countries in sub-Saharan Africa and a surveillance-based method primarily outside of Africa. The models produce mortality estimates at a 5 × 5 km pixel scale.
