Many states mandate that patients' screening mammography reports include breast density, and some specify that clinicians discuss supplemental breast imaging (SBI) with ultrasound or MRI when dense breasts are noted. In women at excess risk for breast cancer and those with dense breasts, SBI reduces the likelihood of interval cancers. To evaluate the efficiency of various strategies for recommending SBI, investigators studied a cohort of >638,000 women (mean age, 56) who underwent digital mammography screening from 2005 through 2014.
