To characterize the effects of menstruation-related symptoms (MRSs) on work and school productivity, Dutch investigators surveyed >32,000 women (age range, 15–45) through social media. Based on reported hours of paid work or school work, respondents were categorized into a work group (26,000 women; mean age, 30) and a study group (8800 women; mean age, 22).
Absenteeism because of MRSs was reported by 11% and 20% of the work and study groups, respectively. Absenteeism every cycle or almost every cycle was reported by 3% of the entire cohort. Presenteeism (loss of productivity while at work or school) was reported by 81% of the work group and 84% of the study group. Rates of absenteeism and presenteeism were highest among women aged 15 to 20. …
