The use of exogenous hormones has been linked with the onset and exacerbation of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), but this relationship is unclear in the context of treatment for cancer. To address this issue, investigators conducted a retrospective, multicenter, cohort study involving 447 IBD patients with newly diagnosed breast or prostate cancer.
Among the 400 patients (90%) with inactive disease, 28% had IBD relapse. Those treated with combination cytotoxic and hormone therapy had nearly twice the risk for IBD relapse as those who did not receive either therapy (hazard ratio, 1.86).
