Implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs) are indicated for primary prevention of sudden cardiac death in select patient groups according to severity of left ventricular systolic dysfunction, cause of heart failure, and symptoms. However, ICDs are associated with medical and psychological adverse effects. In this retrospective study that involved 2235 patients (mean age, 69) with ICDs implanted for primary prevention, researchers examined whether inappropriate ICD shocks are more likely in patients with substantial comorbidities. The presence or absence of 24 specified comorbidities was determined for each patient.
