African-Americans (AAs) have a higher risk for Alzheimer disease (AD) and have lower cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) tau biomarkers. Inflammation has been linked to the AD process and may be more prominent in AAs. Researchers have now investigated the molecular basis of AD in AA and in Caucasians. In their approach, they first determined whether there were racially related differences in baseline CSF tau and cytokine biomarkers in middle-aged, cognitively normal participants with family histories of AD and in older participants with normal cognition, mild cognitive impairment, and AD dementia.
