Multiple studies have shown that statins reduce hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) risk in patients with chronic liver disease (e.g., NEJM JW Gastroenterol Apr 2013 and Gastroenterology 2013; 144:323). Moreover, recent retrospective studies have suggested that lipophilic statins (atorvastatin, lovastatin, simvastatin) prevent HCC more effectively than hydrophilic statins (pravastatin, rosuvastatin).
To examine this issue further, investigators have conducted a prospective, propensity-score–matched cohort study using data from Swedish registries of patients with hepatitis B and C virus infections between 2005 and 2013.
