Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia (SAB) is a serious infection that often becomes complicated by metastatic infections such as endocarditis, abscesses, or osteomyelitis. Thus, SAB is associated with considerable morbidity and a 90-day mortality rate of around 30%. Besides patient comorbidities, several factors related to SAB management also have considerable impact on the outcome.
A panel of about 30 experts reviewed the literature on potential process and outcome indicators for SAB published between January 2000 and May 2017.
