Diverticulitis has been shown to disproportionately affect women, but studies assessing the possible preventive effect of fiber have had methodological limitations, due to not considering diverticulitis separately from other diverticular diseases, and have not provided information regarding fiber subtype.
To address these knowledge gaps, researchers assessed more than 50,000 women (ages, 43–70 years) in the 1990–2014 Nurses' Health Study who had no diverticulitis, cancer, or inflammatory bowel disease at baseline. Diet was assessed with validated questionnaires every 4 years. Incidence of diverticulitis requiring antibiotic therapy or hospitalization (the primary endpoint) was assessed by questionnaires every 4 years from 2008 to 2014.
