A recent meta-analysis showed that sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 (SGLT-2) inhibitors lower risks for major adverse cardiovascular (CV) events, hospital admissions for heart failure, and all-cause death in patients with type 2 diabetes and known heart disease (NEJM JW Gen Med Jan 15 2019 and Lancet 2019; 393:31). However, CV effects of SGLT-2 inhibitors in routine practice are unclear. In this study, researchers used data from national registries in Scandinavia to compare outcomes among new users of SGLT-2 inhibitors with outcomes among new users of dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitors, which do not have CV effects.
