Supracervical Hysterectomy or Endometrial Ablation for Heavy Menstrual Bleeding?

In a randomized trial, laparoscopic supracervical hysterectomy yielded greater satisfaction and better quality of life than endometrial ablation.

When medical treatment for heavy menstrual bleeding fails, many women opt for endometrial ablation (EA); nonetheless, a significant proportion of these women will require repeat surgery, and supracervical hysterectomy is one option. Investigators in the U.K. conducted a randomized controlled trial comparing laparoscopic supracervical hysterectomy (LSH) with EA in 660 premenopausal women with heavy menstrual bleeding. The uterine body was removed at LSH via a port (following morcellation inside a bag) or a vaginal incision (as a whole specimen).
