Hydrocephalus is a common neurologic condition that affects patients across the lifespan. Ventriculoperitoneal shunt (VPS) insertion is the most commonly performed surgical treatment for hydrocephalus. Unfortunately, VPSs are associated with increased risk for infection, particularly in children, which can lead to complicated and prolonged hospital courses. Several types of VPS have been designed to decrease complications. However, very little evidence is available to support the most appropriate VPS selection.
