Single-operator cholangioscopy is now in widespread use, and modern digital devices offer greatly enhanced image quality compared with that of older fiber-optic systems. Indeterminate biliary strictures are among the most common clinical targets for cholangioscopy, as the technology allows direct visualization of the interior of the bile duct, provides optical clues as to whether the stricture in question is benign or malignant, and can facilitate tissue sampling by a variety of means.
