Transgender individuals are at excess risk for depression, anxiety, suicide attempts, and completed suicides. To ascertain the benefits of gender-affirming hormone treatments and surgeries in such patients, investigators examined Swedish national data from 2005 through 2015; the population of >9,700,000 included 2679 transgender individuals.
Compared with the general population, transgender patients had threefold higher chances of receiving treatment for mood and anxiety disorders and sixfold higher rates of hospitalization after a suicide attempt.
