Adverse events (AEs) associated with colonoscopy are uncommon but can be serious. Studies assessing the prevalence of and factors associated with colonoscopy AEs are heterogeneous, and few population-based data are available. Now, the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy has provided updated estimates of perforation, bleeding, and mortality from a systematic review and meta-analysis of population-based studies. They also examined AEs associated with advanced resection techniques and other less common AEs. Results were as follows:
