Direct laryngoscopy (DL) has been the historical standard for pediatric airway management, in part due to a paucity of data on video laryngoscopy (VL) in this population. In adults, studies show an advantage of VL over DL. In the current study, researchers used data from the National Emergency Airway Registry (NEAR) to compare success rates of DL and VL in pediatric patients while controlling for predictors of difficult airways.
The analysis included 625 pediatric intubations (47% DL, 53% VL) at 23 sites. First-pass success was significantly higher in the VL group (84.0% vs. 74.5%).
