The remarkable effectiveness of fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) in treating recurrent Clostridioides difficile infections has led to a marked increase in its use for this problematic condition. In addition, FMT is now being evaluated as a potential treatment for other conditions linked to an altered intestinal microbiome, and more than 300 clinical trials on its use are listed on ClinicalTrials.gov. Still, there are safety concerns, and new reports document both the transmission of a drug-resistant pathogen through FMT as well as the complexity in trying to eliminate the risk.
