Intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms (IPMNs) are commonly encountered in clinical practice and are often discovered incidentally on cross-sectional imaging performed for other indications. IPMNs are rarely found to be malignant at the time of diagnosis and rarely develop into malignancy. When IPMNs are malignant, the condition is referred to as intraductal papillary mucinous carcinoma (IPMC) and is often thought to be similar to invasive ductal carcinoma of the pancreas (i.e., pancreatic cancer).
