To determine whether states with recreational marijuana legalization (RML) differ in cannabis use and misuse from states without RML, researchers analyzed data from a national survey involving computerized, self-administered interviews of >500,000 Americans.
Participants were separated into three age groups: 12–17, 18–25, and ≥26 years. The 18–25 age group did not differ in past-month marijuana use or the prevalence of cannabis use disorder (CUD) among states with or without RML. In the 12–17 age group, CUD prevalence increased about 25% more in RML states during their legalization period than in other states, whether or not they legalized medical marijuana.
