A belief that abortion increases suicide risk has been used to justify restrictive U.S. abortion policies. The research evidence has been inconsistent, many systematic reviews have failed to find such evidence, and the studies have been flawed (self-reporting, low participation, and limited control of confounders). To examine risk for first suicide attempts in women after a first abortion, researchers analyzed national Danish registry data on 523,380 women (birth years, 1980–1998) from age 18 through 2016; 9.4% had an abortion, and 2.0% had attempted suicide.
