Emergency department (ED) patients often harbor multidrug-resistant organisms (MDRO). A scoring system to identify patients at high MDRO risk could be helpful. To establish such a system, researchers assessed 5460 adult patients presenting with a clinical suspicion of infection to EDs in 54 Spanish centers during 2017. Roughly 60% of the cohort served as the derivation cohort; the remaining 40%, the validation cohort.
One quarter of the patients were identified as having an MDRO infection, which was an independent risk factor for mortality (odds ratio 1.6) and for readmission (17% in non-MDRO and 23% in MDRO infections).
