Benzodiazepines are still some of the most commonly prescribed drugs, despite drawbacks such as tolerance and withdrawal (developing in as little as 2 weeks of daily use), increased risk for death by overdose (e.g., when combined with opioids), and negative effects on several cognitive domains. Benzodiazepines can also cause amnesia, aggressive episodes, and delirium, as well as falls and confusion in the elderly.
