Trainees are often eager to learn techniques of endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), and at many hospitals a GI fellow is commonly involved in these procedures. Yet it remains unclear whether the presence and participation of a trainee increases the risk for adverse events and worse procedure outcome.
To investigate this issue, researchers conducted a prospective, observational study at six centers (both low-volume and high-volume) across Europe, comparing rates of technical success and adverse events of ERCP procedures performed with versus without the assistance of a trainee. Most trainees had little to no prior ERCP experience.
