One third of patients who suffer myocardial infarctions (MIs) are older than 75, but risk prediction models have not incorporated functional assessments into prognostic tools for post-MI assessments. In a prospective cohort of 3000 older patients (age, ≥75) who were discharged from 94 U.S. hospitals, investigators identified 15 variables that predicted 6-month post-MI mortality. These variables were used to construct a “SILVER-AMI” tool that incorporates functional impairments — including cognition, mobility, and muscle strength (all formally measured during hospitalization) — and self-reported weight loss and vision or hearing impairment to estimate mortality.
